Song - Bush Folly
|
Crossville Tennessee
When George Bush appeared in the evening at Robby Safdie's house, Safdie didn't take the visit lightly. Mr. Safdie, a 53 year old teacher said, "I had been hoping I would get to see him and tell him a thing or two, and then it just happened."
But the visit did not turn out as Mr. Safdie had expected. "I actually didn't say much. I was so freaked out that I just wanted to run away. His visit with me did result with something of interest, however, I came out of the experience with a war protest song and I call it Bush's Folly."
Safdie said, "It was one of the strangest dreams that I ever had." Mr.Safdie described what occurred in his dream in the following manner.
"In my dream I saw a video-montage of George Bush. The montage was accompanied with background music and verse which depicted the events that unfolded. The dream began with a panoramic view of large rolling plains of wheat with a magnificent blue sky. I was flying high above the plains. As I flew closer to the ground, I noticed that the person standing on the ground was me. It was as if I had a zoom lens and I zoomed closer to me until I merged with myself at which point I began seeing things from field level through my eyes.
The Blue sky became the foreground and suddenly I saw a paused video shot of George Bush’s face and shoulders on the sky above my head. It was poorly defined image as if the signal on which it was coming in on was weak. The camera zoomed out and I could see that Bush was speaking and telling everyone that he was going to attack Iraq. As he was doing this I began to hear background music playing. It was a harmonica, and then I heard a voice singing, We’re all getting older and we’ve seen it all before, the failure of our leaders and they’ve taken us to war.” It was just as clear as if it were stereo in the home.
As the dream progressed, I tried to move out from under the images which loomed over my head, but there wasn’t a place big enough for me to move. It was as if I could only take a few steps in any direction.
The images in the sky flashed to different scenes and as it did, the music became louder and louder, I saw the arrogant face of a politician calling Americans traitors for not supporting the Presidents decision. The music kept on playing. I saw the President speaking and telling everyone that Iraq had stockpiles of biological weapons and developing dirty bombs. As each of these scenes unfolded the verses of the music changed to match the scene that was appearing. I saw Bush wearing a crown of thorns and washing his hands in oil as droplets of oil dripped from his hair. I saw Bush wearing his air force flight suit and smiling and waving to people, and finally I saw a street battle taking place in Iraq."
"I am not sure if it was a dream or a nightmare,' Safdie said, 'all I know is that I heard this music playing as the dream took place. When I woke up, I tried to write all of the lyrics down before I forgot them while desperately whistling the melody over and over again until I had memorized it".
What is really unusual about this is that Mr.. Safdie is not a song writer or musician. He has been teaching for 29 years at a community college. He said, "I am old college teacher. The song played in my dream though, just as if I were listening to it on a stereo." His wife and children approve of the song but were suprised by Bush's nocturnal visit. They did not have the same dream.
Safdie says that he is distributing Bush's Folly on the web in MP3 format at no cost. He said, "If a public figure like Bush takes time out of his busy schedule to visit me, then it is obvious that as a courtesy to the nation, I make the song a public record. I encourage everyone to copy it, play it, and send it to their friends."

May 2004*
We're all getting older
And we've seen it all before
The failure of our leaders
And they've taken us to war
There's the waving of ol' glory
And the spreading of the lies
The cover-ups that hide the truth
As men and women die
Chorus:
But we're all getting wiser
And we've learned from our mistakes
Its not the destination
But the choices that we make
Well they told us there was anthrax
Poison gas and dirty bombs
But when they couldn't find them
They sang a different song
We're building a great nation
And the orders are to send
More sons and daughters off to war
In a fight that has no end
Chorus:
But we're all getting wiser...
They whisper words of rapture
Guiding policy and law
They hope to help the prophets
In the rising of the Fall
There's swearing on the Bible
But it wasn't Christ who said
"Take the oil from their fields
And pour it on our heads"
Chorus:
But we're all getting wiser...
He's jumped into a flight suit
For a hero's photo-op
The tiny man with big schemes
Has risen to the top
Well the mission's not accomplished
With a war that has no peace
But they knew before the first shot
Who'd get the oil lease
Chorus:
But we're all getting wiser...
Finale: Sung Moderately and Conclusively (music may be adlibbed)
You fool me once, but not so twice
Or else the shame's on me.
If it's too hard to keep that straight
God help our liberty
Chorus [sung strongly]:
But we're all getting wiser
And we've learned from our mistakes
It's not the destination
But the choices that we make. |

The toll of US casualties since
Saddam Hussein's capture is higher
than in the same period before it.
